Gum trees, not salt
Wyoming sits north of Gosford on the rising ground at the head of the valley, backing onto bushland. There is no marine corrosion problem worth specifying for up here. What there is, in quantity, is eucalypt.
Mature gums do not drop their load once a year and stop. They shed leaves, long strips of bark and hard seed capsules continuously, and the canopy keeps roof faces shaded and damp enough that the debris compacts instead of blowing clear. That changes what fails and in what order.

The failure sequence on a Wyoming roof
- Leaf litter and bark build up in the valleys and at the gutter mouth.
- The effective depth of the gutter halves, so it overflows in rain it used to handle.
- Water backs up over the rear lip of the gutter, under the first course of tiles, and into the eaves.
- Meanwhile the packed valley holds moisture against the valley iron, which rusts from underneath.
- The ceiling marks, usually several metres from where the water actually entered.
Almost none of that is visible from the driveway, which is why Wyoming roofs tend to get looked at only after the plaster goes.
Steep blocks make it worse
Plenty of Wyoming streets sit on a real slope, with 1970s and 80s brick-and-tile homes split over two levels and a yard that drops away. A big roof catchment emptying fast into a steep yard needs downpipes that are properly sized and actually connected to somewhere sensible. We check that as part of the inspection, not as an afterthought.
What usually fixes it
- Clearing and inspecting valleys along their full length, then replacing the irons if they have gone.
- Gutter repair or replacement with the fall reset, plus leaf guard chosen for the species overhead.
- Rebedding and repointing ridge lines as part of a roof restoration where the tiles are still good.
- Targeted roof repairs where a single flashing or a run of broken tiles is the cause.
